Steve set off to see Bucky at the usual spot at the usual time. Everyday they’d meet and talk. It had been months since he last contacted with S.H.I.E.L.D after finally setting down his uniform and title to live a normal life, leaving everything behind him. He didn’t want part of what S.H.I.E.L.D have done and what they wanted to do in the near future.
Late in the afternoon he reached the park bench where he’d sit and wait. He was always early. He never wanted to be late. He wanted to spend as much time as possible with him before returning back to his empty apartment. The conversations between him and Bucky were one sided, steve would start and finish the conversation. Bucky would just listen. He checked his watch before standing up once more only to walk a few pathways down to the meeting point.
"Hey pal." Steve would whisper. "I missed you" Bucky wouldn’t reply. "Listen, i need to let you know" Steve choked up before clearing his throat to continue. "I need to let you know that the thing i regret the most above all the men ive killed, all the people’s lives ive put at risk; the thing i regret the most is letting you walk away when i could have done something, said something. Anything.I never had a best friend, yet alone a friend until you showed up and im grateful to have you, James Buchanan Barnes. Im grateful to call you my friend. You were there for me when they buried my parents, when i was too dumb to run away from a fight and almost got myself killed several times" Steve hesitated. "You we’re there for me from the beginning" Bucky didn’t reply. "I want to say thank you and im sorry. Im sorry i didn’t do anything sooner."
”I’m sorry you’re not here anymore because i didn’t do what friends are supposed to do for one another.” Steve was reduced to tears. “I’m sorry i didn’t protect you. I’m sorry i didn’t save you.” Steve brushed the top of the marble stone with words engraved into the surface. ‘Here lies James Buchanan Barnes. A soldier. A friend.’
Bucky was beyond the point of saving. Hydra’s brainwashing threw him over the line. Drove him insane. He was wedged between wanting to follow Hydra’s orders and wanting to remember who the man on the bridge was and why he felt familiarity with him. During Hydra’s memory swipe, which had been used on Bucky more than enough times, Bucky’s heart gave out. The process of gaining memories and having them taken away from him just as he catches a glimpse of the truth was too overwhelming. He’d spend endless nights of screeching, flickers of light and memories being played to him. He’d claw at himself with his metal arm in his sleep until he bled. He’d tear up his sheets until they were slim slithers of fabric. Remembering his past life, remembering Steve happened more frequently so Hydra would continue swiping his memories over and over and over until he was the soulless, anger driven assassin they wanted. But Bucky would always end up remembering his best friend. The last memory swipe took every ounce of energy and hope out of bucky. His heart gave out on him quicker than a blink of the eye. All the resisting, all the fighting amounted to nothing. He died.
"I guess we’ve reached the end of the line, pal" Steve whispered. He tapped the top of the stone lightly and wiped his eyes, pulling a brave face. "I’ll see you the usual time tomorrow."
